Ever since I started my career in photography in 2006, I have worked as a photojournalist and a documentary photographer covering a wide variety of subjects. As such, my interests drew me to photograph the impact on life during the Covid-19 lockdown in culturally-rich areas such as Old Delhi.
The streets of Old Delhi are like Pandora’s box for us photographers. No matter the time of day, one never comes back empty-handed… there is always something interesting to shoot.
The lockdown changed everything pretty drastically. The Jama Masjid, which used to always be overcrowded, stood deserted. These images are my work based on life during Ramadan around the mosque on lockdown days.
The massive doors of Jama Masjid were closed to the general public during the month of Ramadan. In my photographs, the caretaker of the mosque looks out at the empty streets of Old Delhi. The people living and working in the area offer their Namaz next to their shops.
Even when public health concerns made long-standing traditions of Eid and Ramadan difficult to practice in large groups, the faith of people in these photographs stayed strong. On the surface, it may seem like life stood still – but life always finds a way to keep moving forward.
