The Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. is equivalent, in 35 mm format, to a 24 mm super-wide-angle lens. The lens is optimised for maximum contrast rendition at maximum aperture, thus ensuring consistent high quality from its close-focusing limit to infinity. Thanks to its exceptionally high correction, images are almost entirely free from distortion. Five of the thirteen lenses arranged in nine groups have anomalous partial dispersion, and three of these are fluoride lenses with particularly low dispersion (colour scattering) characteristics for the correction of chromatic aberration. Two lenses are also elaborately manufactured with aspherical surfaces. Only the six lenses on the back are moved when focusing offering outstanding imaging quality even when close-focusing.
The Leica Elmarit-S 45 mm f/2.8 ASPH. (36 mm in 35 mm format) is as outstanding for landscapes and architectural photography as it is for studio work. Its extremely elaborate construction, designed to deliver maximum contrast at maximum aperture and at the shortest focusing distance, ensures that the lens is practically free of aberrations; monochromatic aberration is almost nonexistent and chromatic aberrations are corrected to an absolute minimum. Three of the twelve lens elements are manufactured from glasses with anomalous partial dispersion for the minimization of chromatic aberration and two others from high-refractive-index glasses with exceptionally low dispersion. In addition to these, one aspherical surface is employed for the minimization of monochromatic aberrations. Rear-group focusing guarantees consistently outstanding imaging properties from infinity to the closest focusing distance.
The angle of view of this fast, wide-angle lens makes it ideal for studio work and architectural photography. Maximum contrast performance is guaranteed, even at maximum aperture. Its sophisticated design and construction almost completely eliminate undesirable effects like distortion or chromatic aberration. The optical design features 11 lens elements. Two are made from glasses with anomalous partial dispersion, another three with low dispersion. This reduces chromatic aberration effects to a minimum. Two elements with aspherical surfaces ensure extremely low distortion. And finally, rear group focusing guarantees perfect imaging properties throughout the entire focusing range.
